Civic body’s sewer point still discharges sludge into Kala Singha drain

The newly appointed Chairman of Punjab Pollution Control Board,K.S Pannu,detected a major sewer point of the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar discharging sludge into the drain near Sabzi Mandi,during a surprise visit to Kala Singha drain today.

The newly appointed Chairman of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB),K.S Pannu,detected a major sewer point of the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) discharging sludge into the drain near Sabzi Mandi,during a surprise visit to Kala Singha drain today.

The MCJ had earlier claimed that this outlet had been connected to the dedicated sewer line.

The Chariman immediately conveyed his displeasure to the MCJ.

It was observed that the Pholriwal treatment plant of MCJ is in operation.

He found various outlets discharging sewage into the drain.

These outlets are yet to be connected to the sewer line.

He also visited the first and the second Module of the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) of Leather Complex and and got effluent samples collected.

The Chariman came to know that the Pholriwal treatment plant of MCJ is operating at a capacity of 100 MLD and the PSPCL has not yet released the electric connection for the 25 MLD expansion treatment plant which is ready for commissioning.

He directed the PSPCL to release the electric connection immediately.

Earlier the PSPCL had not disconnected the power supply of the polluting units and now it has not yet released an electric connection to a treatment plant in the Pholriwal.

The Chairman directed board officials to keep a watch on the developments related to the drain with a view to ensure its cleaning in a time bound manner.

The Kala Singha drain passes through Jalandhar City. It carries industrial effluent from Industrial Area,Industrial Estate,Sports & Surgical Complex and the domestic effluent of Jalandhar City.

Its untreated drain water is causing serious diseases among people living in villages along the drain and the Malwa region which is using the Sutlej river’s water for drinking.
