The facilities that were promised when the radio autos were introduced have gradually been withdrawn. The operators had introduced the concept of providing newspapers and water bottles in autos but this has been done away with. Female drivers had also been trained but they are no longer working here.

The Tuk-Tuk service was launched by Tricity Travels and Tours in 2009 and a year later Yo Yos were introduced by Tricity Auto Club. The pink autos with a global positioning system (GPS) were introduced with the aim of providing reliable services to commuters. The dial-an-auto service was to be available round the clock.

Meanwhile,the number of Tuk Tuks has decreased. Having started the service with 31 autos,just 10 to 12 autos are now plying in the city. The reason being attributed is that the fare hike has not been proportional to the hike the price of fuel and other expenses. The number from where Yo Yos can be booked,too,has been taken over by another operator.

Tricity Tours and Travels MD Col V S Dhillon (Retd) said that losses were being faced while plying radio autos. The expenses are more than what is required for a normal auto. The price of LPG has increased from Rs 26 when the service was started to Rs 47 now. The price of spare parts has increased,causing an increase in maintenance costs. However,the fare hike is not proportional to the expense rise. We have not yet implemented the hike that the Administration had recommended, he argued.

Applications for non-AC cabs

The UT Administration has invited applications for plying non-AC cabs in the city. Once an operator is finalised,non-AC cabs would ply on city roads. Secretary (State Transport Authority) Mahavir Kaushik said that a number of applications have been received for non-AC cabs. These would be scrutinised before a final decision is taken.
