Temperatures in Chandigarh plunged below those in Shimla and Srinagar on Sunday, the minimum dipping to 3.6 °C,the lowest this season. Even the maximum of 8.2°C,12 degrees below normal, was below that in Srinagar (9.5°C),Shimla (11.7 °C) and Dharamsala (19.4 degrees.°C). Barring Karnal and Amritsar,a few places in the region were as cold as Chandigarh today.

A meteorological department official attributed the dip in temperature to the heavy fog which was blocking the sunlight. The cold wave will continue for some time and so will fog and mist, especially during morning and evening.

Visibility was low as a thick layer of fog enveloped the tricity all day. Commuting was a struggle during the morning and evening. Some trains got delayed and no flight landed at the airport or took off.

The day temperature has already created an all-time record this season, dipping on January 5 to 7.4°C,way below the 8°C recorded on January 12,2003.

People on the streets tried to keep warm with bonfires. From indoors, the demand for electricity shot up and some laces saw power cuts.

For the past three days, the sun has been making brief appearances,if at all, during the afternoon. With the thick blanket of fog today, even this relief was missing. In some sectors the streetlights did not work, creating problems for commuters.
