Childhood friend Angad happy to be in Yuvi’s territory

When Yuvraj Singh hit the winning runs for Kings XI Punjab in the Super Over against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai, his childhood friend Angad Bedi was on hand to “smell the tension”.

Son of legendary Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi,Angad is part of the commentary team as an anchor for the IPL matches and can’t still get over the tense final moments of that game. “I was supposed to be neutral but my heart was with my dear friend Yuvi…we had grown up together, played a lot of cricket together and I knew Yuvi didn’t want to be on the losing side that night. But I honestly didn’t expect a reverse sweep to score the winning runs,” Angad,in Chandigarh for the Kings XI Punjab-Rajasthan Royals game, said.

“Our fathers are good friends and so are we. I remember as young cricketers we used to have so much fun together. Yuvraj was part of the Bishan Singh Bedi Cricket Trust and both of us trained under my father. In fact, his father (Yograj Singh) had sent Yuvraj to be part of the trust and get trained under my dad. We used to travel a lot for matches during those days. During our camp days in Chail in Himachal Pradesh,Yuvi particularly enjoyed dancing on a Prabhudeva number called ‘Muqabala,Muqabala’.

Like me Yuvraj also loves films. His father is a Punjabi actor,so that influence is there. Now we live in the same city (Mumbai),so we try to hang out with each other quite often along with Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra.”

If Yuvraj was lucky to follow in the footsteps of his father and got to play for India,Angad wasn’t too lucky. He was a left-arm spinner like his father but couldn’t go beyond the U-15s and U-19s for Delhi.

“I was always a cricket buff but it was films that really fascinated me during my childhood days. And my father gave me the space to choose my interests. Despite being son of legendary cricketer I had a very modest upbringing. It was lovely to learn spinning tricks from my father. I use to train for seven to eight hours every day,” the 27-year old said,”As I grew older my passion for cinema got stronger. One day I decided to give up cricket and pursue career in cinema and move to Mumbai.”

Unable to replicate the success of his father,Angad began a career in modeling. His first assignment came when he hosted a cookery show with cricketers as guests on the show. After he made appearance in Kaya Taran,a television adaptation of a Malayalam short story by N. S. Madhavan,When Big Tree Falls,The Earth Is Bound To Shake. He is now doing a movie “The Little Godfather” which is directed by Joy Augustine. Angad is also anchoring another show on TV called ‘Emotional Atyachar’.

On the IPL assignment,Angad feels: “I love the job. It is like giving something back to the game. Cricket is like religion in India,so it is incredible to cover it.”
