On questioning, the owner Sanjeev Kumar told the raiding officials that he was yet to apply for the issuance of drugs licence though he was running the shop for the past couple of months. During the search,12 different types of habit forming allopathic drugs were found. Kumar even failed to produce any sale and purchase record of the drugs. According to Kaur, preliminary investigations revealed that the same person earlier ran a chemist shop in Gharuan village near here, the drugs licence of which was cancelled after he was found selling and storing intoxicants illegally.
She disclosed that the accused has been challaned under Section 18 C of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act,1940,and Rule 2 (EE) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act Rules,1945,and the case has been forwarded to the State Drugs Controller for seeking prosecution sanction. On receipt of State Drugs Controllers nod, prosecution proceedings would be launched against the accused before the competent court of law, Kaur informed, while adding that the law provides three years rigorous imprisonment or fine or both for the offence.
She also warned chemists across Mohali district against any unethical and illegal sale and purchase of habit forming drugs. Anybody found guilty would be dealt with sternly, she asserted.
