Chandigarh University becomes first private varsity to bag MAKA Trophy

Chandigarh University MAKA Trophy: At a grand ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Chandigarh University (CU) was awarded the prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2024 by President Droupadi Murmu. The trophy, presented during the National Sports Awards ceremony, was received by CU’s Senior Managing Director Deep Inder Singh Sandhu and Pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Devinder Singh.

Sanjay Kumar, a CU student and member of the Indian hockey team, was honoured with the Arjuna Award for his stellar performance in hockey.

This marks the first time a private university has won the MAKA Trophy since its inception in 1956-57. Chandigarh University earned the recognition due to its exceptional performance in the Khelo India University Games 2024, securing a total of 71 medals, including 32 gold, 18 silver, and 21 bronze. Furthermore, CU athletes won 10 medals while representing India at the 19th Asian Games. The university also had the highest representation of 22 athletes in India’s 650-member contingent for the Asian Games.

Chancellor and Member of Parliament Satnam Singh Sandhu expressed his pride in the university’s achievements: “It is an honour to receive the MAKA Trophy from the President of India today. Our players have made us proud with this feat. Chandigarh University is committed to training and preparing the next generation of athletes who will not only represent the nation internationally but also win medals for India.”

Sandhu further highlighted the university’s extensive support for budding athletes, including professional training, state-of-the-art sports infrastructure, and scholarships. Currently, 1,183 CU athletes are benefiting from annual scholarships worth Rs 8.5 crore.
