Chandigarh Police wing to coordinate with NIA on gangsters, extremists
Over the last many months, some of the criminals arrested by the Operations Cell were found in direct contact with dreaded gangsters, including Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, Sampat Nehra and Davinder Bambhia.

The UT Police’s Operations Cell, an independent body to tackle terrorism and organised crime, has been tasked with coordinating with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which recently decided to form a ‘Joint Listing Committee’ against gangsters and extremists with Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh police forces.
A source said, “As the Operations Cell has already been dealing with anti-national, terrorism-related cases, it was obvious to give it the assignment to coordinate with NIA. Over the last many months, the Operations Cell has arrested interstate gangsters involved in extortion and blackmailing. Some of these criminals were found in direct contact with dreaded gangsters, including Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, Sampat Nehra and Davinder Bambhia. Moreover, when terrorism was at its peak in neighbouring Punjab, Chandigarh had not been unaffected. At that time, the role of the Operations Cell was prominent. The arrest of many terrorists, including Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) ultra Jagtar Singh Hawara, Paramjeet Singh Bheroa, Jagtar Singh Tara, Paramjeet Singh, in the 1980s, 90s are to the credit of Operations Cell.”
The cell, headed by IPS SP Mridul and Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon, is situated in Sector 26. More than 80 personnel are with the cell and most of them are put through tough commando training. The Quick Reaction Team (QRT) of this wing is equipped with two bullet-proof vehicles and all the sophisticated weapons including AK-47 rifles, MP5 machine guns, Glock pistols and LMGs to handle hostile situations.
SP Mridul said, “We have already been working in coordination with Punjab and Haryana police. Now onwards, we will work with NIA too. As the focus of NIA is to crack the narco-terrorism modules involving gangsters, terrorists, and drug smugglers, Operations Cell was selected for representing the Chandigarh Police.”
Last week, at a high-level meeting held under NIA Director General Dinker Gupta in Panchkula, the national agency decided to constitute a “joint listing committee”, comprising representatives of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana to map the network of criminal syndicates. A robust witness protection programme will also be rolled out and efforts will be made for fast trials.
