WITH TWO national highways passing through Panchkula, on which maximum road accidents have been reported in the recent past, the traffic police highlights that maximum traffic violations pertain to overspeeding of vehicles on highways and riding without helmets on city roads.

The Panchkula-Barwala stretch on NH-73 and Panchkula-Kalka stretch on NH-22 have emerged as the killer stretches with the majority of the road accidents reported on the two stretches. Police claim overspeeding as one of the major causes for these accidents.

“On the highways, overspeeding is the most common, while in the city, maximum traffic violations are of riding two-wheelers without helmets. Bikers are among the most common traffic violators, be it riding without helmets, taking the wrong side on the road, or triple-riding. Violations like use of high beam have relatively decreased over the last few months,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Munish Sehgal.

Over the last one year, the traffic police has increased its presence on the roads, and also set up checking points on major roads. However, the inadequate manpower remains a drawback. Efforts were made to rope in Home Guard volunteers, but the problem persists.

ACP Sehgal said, “It is a problem, but we are working on it. One such plan is to start an e-challan system, which will help in automatic generation of challans.”

As many as 56 CCTV cameras have already been installed across the city on strategic locations. The control room has been set up at Sector 14 police station.

According to the police, the maximum traffic violations have been detected near Majri Chowk in Sector 1, an accident-prone area where commuters tend to jump red lights, violate speed limits, and under flyovers on the Zirakpur-Panchkula stretch of NH-73.

There have been a number of violations for driving without valid permits; these violations are committed by mostly trucks.

Among other areas, the lack of properly laid zebra crossing on various roads has also put the police in a tough spot while issuing challans. Except for few roads, where the zebra crossing is visible, it is missing on most road intersections and traffic light points. “This is a problem, because of which police are unable to challan for jumping the red lights,” the ACP said.
