Chandigarh fight back but Jalandhar still on top

Chandigarh did well to finish the day on 273 for 6 in 105 overs after they were reduced to 70 for 4 at one stage. However,they are still trailing Jalandhar by 141 runs

Despite a sparkling century by Amit Parashar (100) and a superb bowling performance by Gurinder Singh (6 for 113),Chandigarh found themselves staring down the barrel against Jalandhar at the close of the third day’s play at FC Sondhi cricket ground in Jalandhar on Monday. Chandigarh,who were struggling at 110 for 4 on Sunday,resurrected their innings through Amit Prashar and Gurkirat Walia as they got into the rescue act and added 159 runs for the fifth wicket partnership to bail the team out of the precarious position. However,Jalandhar fought back by picking up two more wickets as Chandigarh trailed the hosts by 141 runs.

Earlier,overnight batsmen Amit and Gurinder faced some hostile bowling from the Jalandhar bowlers in the morning but managed to keep their wickets intact. However,they slowly got into the groove and started hitting the Jalandhar bowlers all over the ground. They batted sensibly and added some precious runs for the team. Together they sticthed 159 runs for the fifth wicket. Amit reached his century off 211 balls and hit 13 timely boundaries and two mighty sixes during his knock. Gurinder,on the other hand after picking up six wickets,came good with the bat also and was out for 75 runs. Manan Vohra was the other notable contributor with the bat as he scored 34 runs.

On Sunday,the hosts maintained their stranglehold over the Chandigarh team as they went on to amass 414 runs in 131 runs. Chandigarh had to pay penalty of eight runs for slow run rate. Himanshu Chawla smashed a quickfore 144-ball 127 with the help of 14 boundaries and two towering sixes. He put on 196 runs for the fifth wicket with Abhishek Gupta (76) to push the team past the 400-run mark. Other contributors included Anmol Luther (56) and Taruwar Kohli (67). If not for some splendid bowling performance by Gurinder Singh (6 for 113),Chandigarh would have been in deep trouble. He picked up all the Jalandhar wickets that fell on Sunday.

Patiala in sight of outright victory

TWIN centuries by Jeevanjot Singh (104) and Ravi Inder Singh (158) put Patiala in the driver’s seat against Amritsar in the match played at Dhruv Pandove Stadium in Patiala. After amassing 478 runs in their first innings,Patiala reduced Amritsar to 159 for 7 in their second innings as the visitors were still trailing the hosts teams’ first innings total by 131 runs.

Earlier,Patiala openers-Jeevanjot and Ravi Inder- batted splendidly and were involved in an opening stand of 200 runs. Jeevanjot was dismissed for 104 runs which he made off 150 balls with the help of ten boundaries. Kunwar Raina and Ravi Inder then added 100 runs for the second wicket before Kunwar was out for 3. Meanwhile,Ravi Inder went on to complete his century and smashed 158 runs off 255 balls. His knock included 16 boundaries and two mighty sixes. Himanshu Chawla (51) and Preet Kamal (53) also struck half-centuries each as Patiala put a huge total on the board. For Amritsar,Vinay Chaudhary (5 for 162) and Charanjit Singh (5 for 165) were the main wicket-takers.

Trailing Patiala by 294 runs,Amritsar were 159 for 7 at the close of the day’s play. Arush Sabbarwal was unbeaten on 47. Aman Bawa top scored for the team with 50 runs. Karan Sharma (36) and Charanjit Singh (38) also contributed with the bat. Rajwinder Singh (3 for 68) and Sarabjit Ladda (3 for 39) shared the spoils for Patiala.
