The confederation submitted over 30 suggestions covering a wide range of urban concerns such as city cleanliness, road repairs, stray dog control and others. ( Express Archive )A meeting of various resident welfare associations (RWAs) under the banner of the Confederation of Resident Welfare Associations was held on Monday at the Phase 7 Community Centre in Mohali, chaired by K K Saini.
The meeting focused on the city’s pressing issues, resulting in the preparation of a written memorandum containing over 30 suggestions for the Municipal Commissioner.
The memorandum emphasised the lack of adequate funds for maintaining parks overseen by RWAs. Mohali has more than 700 parks, out of which 190 have been given to RWAs for upkeep.
“As per clauses 3 and 25 of the existing agreement, RWAs are responsible for the maintenance, repairs, painting, and equipment such as gates and swings in these parks.
However, the funding provided by the municipal corporation is highly insufficient,” stated the association in the letter.
Saini pointed out that according to the Punjab government’s 2017 notification, the park maintenance funds were to be increased by 20 per cent annually, but this has never been implemented.
Due to this, civil society groups are facing serious financial hardship.
He further added, there is a condition that funds should be disbursed by the 10th of each month, the corporation must strictly follow it. This demand was also included in the memorandum.
The confederation submitted over 30 suggestions covering a wide range of urban concerns such as city cleanliness, road repairs, stray dog control, noise pollution, illegal advertisements, park maintenance, sewage system improvement, and sports facilities for youth.
A copy of the memorandum has also been sent to Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, with a request to direct the concerned departments to take appropriate action.
