Harminder Singh will lead 20-member Chandigarh team that will take part in the 63 rd edition of Santosh Trophy to be held in Tamil Nadu
When the camp for Santosh Trophy finally ended on Tuesday morning at the Sector 17 Football Stadium, one could clearly see a sense of satisfaction on coach Bhupinder Singh’s face. After all his 19-day hard work had already started showing results. “I am very happy with the way the training camp went during this tine period. The players showed lot of enthusiasm during the camp. Moreover,I am satisfied with the fitness level of players that has improved considerably now,” said the senior SAI coach.
The smile flashed by Bhupinder could have been bigger if Pune FC defender K Rahul had not gone back on his words. Rahul had confirmed to play for the Chandigarh team before the camp had started but a tempting proposition to play for the star studded Maharashtra team saw him give nod for the Maharashtra team instead. “It’s his choice whom he wants to play for. His presence would have made the squad stronger but we have players in our team who can rise to the occasion. We have a relatively young team and I believe that their eagerness to prove worth would definitely help the team a lot,” voiced the coach.
Choosing a young skipper in the form of 20-year-old Harminder Singh definitely points that Chandigarh are banking on youth power. “I am glad that they saw the potential in me. Now,it’s my turn to repay the faith that they showed in me. We will play to our potential and try to get results,” said Harminder.
Chandigarh, who has been drawn in Cluster I along with Kerala,Chhattisgarh and Nagaland, will play their first match against Chhattisgarh on May 24. They next face Kerala on May 26 while their last match will be against Nagaland on May 28. The 20-member team left to Delhi on Tuesday night.
