CBSE Class X compartment examinees down by 67%

With A number of its Class X students appearing for compartment examinations from the region this year moving down to 4,006 from 12,409 last year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) appears to have received a quick feedback on its latest evaluation system.

The principals of schools in Chandigarh as well as the CBSE officials stated that the semester system and option of choosing school-based assessment system introduced this year for Class X examinations under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) pattern, have resulted in this considerable fall in number of applicants in compartment examinations and the improvement in the pass percentage this time.

“Students have shown a good response towards the introduction of school-based or internal examination system. This year, more than 50 per cent of the students opted for school-based system. For them, the level of stress must have been lesser and that was our sole purpose behind introducing the system,” CBSE’s Regional Officer,RJ Khanderao told Newsline.

“I would suggest the students to shed apprehensions about opting for school-based evaluation system since it would not be indicated anywhere in the mark sheet whether the students have opted for CBSE or school based system. It would make them feel more comfortable during the examinations since they will not have to take examinations at centres other than their schools,” added Khanderao.

Sharing a similar opinion,Principals of different CBSE-affiliated schools in Chandigarh said that along with the semester system,CCE’s various assessment patterns have also contributed towards decreasing stress levels among students.

“The semester system in CCE has done away with the fear of pre-board examinations among students. Now,since the syllabus has been divided into two parts, there is hardly any pressure on students,” said Samuel Charles,Principal of Mount Carmel School,Sector 47.

“Besides the 40 percent contribution of practical exercises to the final grades,CCE has also ensured that a candidate’s whole year’s study does not end up in a three-hour assessment at the end of the session,” Charles added.

“The amount of stress which used to be there on the students during board examinations has almost disappeared since past two years. First the grading system and now the inclusion of option for school-based board and practical assessments, both the factors have made the students tension free. The students are happy for the fact that now they not being assessed solely on the basis of academics. On the whole,it is a good exercise for mediocre and weak students,” said Kund Vala,Principal of Government Model Senior Secondary School,Manimajra.

Meanwhile,Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sector 47,CP Chaudhary added that the new system expects the teachers to be more vigilant and accountable.

“The students are being benefited under the new system as practical exercises appear to be interesting to them. However,it is very important, especially for the teaching staff to take the system in the right spirit so that it does not end up becoming a casual treatment for students,” Chaudhary said.

A total of 2000 schools across Chandigarh,Jammu and Kashmir,Haryana,Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are affiliated to CBSE at present.
