CBI to probe Mirchpur violence: Haryana

In a decision that is likely to prompt the protesting Jats to end their dharna disrupting rail traffic, the Haryana government on Tuesday decided to handover further investigations into the alleged killing of two Dalits in Mirchpur to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The state is likely to move the Supreme Court to shift further investigations to the CBI.

A decision of the Home department to this affect has been conveyed to the Jat protesters who are squatting on a railway track in Jind. The protesters have, among other things, demanded a fresh probe into the Mirchpur incident, following which 98 persons, predominantly Jats, were booked.

Deputy Commissioner of Jind Abhey Singh Yadav on Tuesday said that the state government has decided that further investigation into the incident could be done by the CBI. “We are expecting the stalemate to end soon,” he added. The decision follows a meeting of Cabinet minister Randeep Singh Surjewala with the leaders of the protesters on Monday.

Tara Chand (70) and his 17-year-old polio-stricken daughter Suman were killed when their house was set afire on April 21 last year in Mirchpur district.

Protesting the ongoing trial of the accused, hundreds of Jats have been squatting on the Jind-Jakhal railway track of the Delhi-Ferozepur route, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to passengers for four days now. Nine trains were delayed, six cancelled and another seven trains were short terminated due to the protesters on Tuesday.

“The decision comes in the wake of allegations levelled by the members of the Jat community that the arrest of several persons following the incident was unwarranted and needs to be reviewed as part of a thorough probe,” said an official of the Home department.

Currently, the matter is being probed by the Haryana Police. The call for protests was issued by a Jat Mahapanchayat of 42 khaps after a Delhi court on January 9 directed the Haryana government to move all the 98 accused from Hisar jail to a prison in Delhi.
