It’s a collective effort,involving people from various walks of life and has given the 117 children of Vatika School a reason to cheer. The schools Sector 19 campus,which is dedicated to the hearing and speech-impaired students,is abuzz with activity for the upcoming Winter Bazaar,a tradition thats going strong for a decade now.
Its the initiative of Punjab IAS Officers Wives Association,with an aim to raise funds for the education of these students. The Winter Bazaar is not just a fund-raiser,it also gives us an opportunity to make our presence felt and in the process,involve others to support us, says Renu Agarwal,one of the members of the association.
This year,the bazaar is being designed like a carnival,with many groups,individuals and NGOs participating in the two-day event. We wanted to give people a platform to showcase their products and help raise funds in order to add more facilities in the school, says Agarwal,adding that the members of her organisation will also cook up the seasons special fare.
Apart from handicrafts from the region,phulkari being one of the highlights,also at hand is footwear from Muktsar and Patiala. We have chosen items that are typical to these small cities,usually not seen in Chandigarh. Many of these are dying vocations and need encouragement from different quarters to keep them going, she says,adding that carpets and durries from Amritsar,woollens from Ludhiana,furniture from Hoshiarpur and Amritsar and organic spices will be up for sale. Besides,there will be some in-house products such as candles,aroma oils,cloth bags,hand-made paper items made by the students themselves.
Winter Bazaar will be on from December 10 to 11,10 am-5 pm,at Vatika School,Sector 19
