The accredited social health activists or ASHAs in Haryana now have a motivated reason to ensure that newly-married couples go for family planning. The state government would now pay monetary incentives to the ASHAs if they can ensure proper family planning measures in newly-married couples and help bring down the infant mortality rate, maternal mortality rate thus stabilising the population.
An ASHA would be paid an incentive of Rs 500 for ensuring that the first child to a couple is born after two years of marriage, another Rs 500 if there is a space of three years after the birth of the first child and the second and Rs 1,000 in case the couple opts for two children only, Haryana Health Minister Rao Narender Singh said on Thursday.
He said that the state government has been taking several steps to improve family planning methods for population stabilisation.
Various reviews and fields visits have revealed that despite trained personnel available in the field, clients do not avail of spacing methods due to absence of proper counselling and information regarding the benefit or myths and misconceptions,he said.
In order to address this issue,it has been decided by the Centre to utilise the services of ASHAs for ensuring spacing in family planning and giving her incentives for the efforts.
He said that ASHAs would prepare and update a list of newly married couples, couples with one child or expecting the first child, couples with two children or expecting the second child and get it certified by auxiliary nurse midwife or medical officer.
