Capt seeks resignation of Kalia,Swarna Ram

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh sought resignations of Minister for Industries Manoranjan Kalia and Minister for Technical Education Swarna Ram.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday sought resignations of Minister for Industries Manoranjan Kalia and Minister for Technical Education Swarna Ram,who have been summoned by the CBI in connection with the bribery case in which Chief Parliamentary Secretary Raj Khurana has been arrested. He said the charges of corruption levelled by the Congress against the Badal government had been vindicated by the CBI case and both these senior ministers should be immediately arrested and the government be dissolved to pave way for fresh elections.

“This government is neck deep in corruption. The CBI must arrest the two ministers,” he said while addressing a workers’ meet, first in the series that he launched to reach out to the party cadres at the grassroot level. Amarinder accused Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of protecting his “corrupt” Cabinet colleagues and also condemned the “attempts being made by state government to interfere into the CBI probe”.

The former CM met workers and leaders of four constituencies — Amritsar South,Amritsar West,Amritsar North and Amritsar Central. He said though he had been meeting party workers in the PPCC office in Chandigarh,he wanted to meet grassroot-level leaders and workers. “Moreover, instead of meeting senior leaders in party offices,it is better to reach the party cadres in this way where I can establish a direct contact with them,” he said.

Accompanied by MLAs O P Soni,Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Arvind Khanna, and former MLAs Jasbir Singh Dimpa,Jugal Kishore Sharma and Sukhjinder Randhawa,he said he saw enthusiasm and excitement among the workers, adding that this was not an election-oriented exercise but only an attempt to reach out to the workers. He said the workers had come with all types of problems — political as well as personal. On the issue of factionalism,he said there enthusiasm should not be taken as groupism.

On the criteria of allotting party tickets,he said the decision would be taken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, adding that winnability would be the main criterion and youth and women would get fair representation.

On SGPC elections,he said Congress was a secular party and had no role to play in this.
