Darshan Singh Sahsi ran a successful cloth and textile recycling business in CanadaA 68-year-old businessman and philanthropist, who hailed from Punjab’s Ludhiana district and was settled in Canada for years, was shot dead near his home in Abbotsford in British Columbia province Monday.

In a statement, the Abbotsford police said the “homicide incident on Ridgeview Drive was being investigated.”
“At approximately 9.22 am this morning, Abbotsford Police Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 31300 block of Ridgeview Drive. Upon arrival, officers secured the area and confirmed the incident was confined to a single parked vehicle on the roadway. Inside the vehicle, they discovered a 68-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries,” the Abbotsford police said in a statement.
“Despite lifesaving medical efforts of first responders, the man succumbed to his injuries. No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is still in its early stages, and additional resources have been deployed to support efforts in uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this incident,” said the police.
“The Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit is transitioning the investigation to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which will be providing further updates as the investigation advances,” they said.
Sahsi ran a multinational cloth-recycling business, and was considered a respectable NRI business tycoon in both India and Canada.
In 2016, his nephew Jagjit Singh Sahsi, 36, died of alleged drug addiction. Sahsi had publicly acknowledged his nephew’s drug addiction during his bhog ceremony at the gurdwara in Rajgarh. “I don’t want to hide the truth. My nephew has died of drugs,” he said then.
He had moved to Canada in 1991.
In May, a Sikh businessman was shot dead outside his office in Canada’s Mississauga. Harjeet Singh Dhadda was an entrepreneur in the logistics and compliance industry.
