Nearly a month after a newly married 30-year-old woman, who had moved to Canada from Ludhiana in Punjab, was found dead inside a burned vehicle in British Columbia, the local police have arrested her 24-year-old brother-in-law on charges of murder.

Mandeep Kaur, a resident of Gujjarwal village in Ludhiana, had moved to Canada six years ago on a study visa and got married just seven months ago.

On October 26, the Delta police responded to a car crash and vehicle fire on the 7000-block of Highway 17, where Mandeep, the sole occupant, was discovered deceased. Although the incident was initially suspected to be an accident, investigators soon noted suspicious circumstances and handed the case over to the Major Crime Section.

On November 6, the police arrested Gurjot Singh Khaira, the younger brother of Mandeep’s husband. He was first charged with indignity to human remains after investigators alleged that he had moved her body from one place to another.

Following further investigation, Crown Counsel approved an additional charge of second-degree murder on November 25. Khaira remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on December 11, as per a statement issued by the Delta police on November 25.

Mandeep’s father, Jagdev Singh Jaggi, a former commission agent, shifted to British Columbia nearly two decades ago and has been staying there with his son’s family. Villagers said Mandeep’s wedding to a family from Lodhiwal village took place in Canada around seven months ago, with no ceremony in the village.

Kuldeep Singh, a former sarpanch of Gujjarwal village, said, “Her father shifted to Canada about 20 years ago and never returned. His wife, Jaswinder Kaur, still lives here alone. Mandeep moved to Canada after clearing IELTS. We had heard her marriage was held in Canada a few months ago. It is very sad to hear about this incident. We hope the Canadian police provide justice to the family.”

The Delta police have not shared further investigative details due to the ongoing nature of the case, but extended condolences to Mandeep’s family.

Mandeep’s mother, Jaswinder, is in Faridkot and is expected to return to the village on Sunday. Her relatives said they were unaware of the details of the murder and are awaiting information from the authorities.
