Minibus rams into tree,2 die
PHAGWARA: Two persons were killed and 18 sustained injuries when a minibus rammed into a tree near Sang Dessian village on the Jandiala-Goraya Road. According to the police,the bus was on its way from Jandiala to Goraya. While one of the deceased was identified as Harsh Kumar (24),the other is yet to be identified.
Governor for mobile police stations
AMRITSAR: Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil on Tuesday proposed the setting up of mobile police stations in cities to control crime. Policing in cities and rural areas need separate attention and in villages,model police stations should be set up with policemen fully trained to deal with land-related disputes and well-versed with local laws,he said. Patil said this while addressing a three-day-long global conference on Citizen-Centric Policing. There was a dire need for in-house training to investigate crimes,present cases in courts,control violent mobs and deal with agitating crowds in a proper manner. Policemen need to be trained to combat terrorists and protect lives and properties of innocent people, he added. Welcoming international delegates from 35 countries including the US,Russia,Nepal,Bangladesh and African countries,Patil hailed globalisation in all human activities.
Work begins at Golden Temples plaza
AMRITSAR: Work on constructing the entrance plaza of the Golden Temple has began in full swing. Work on the temporary Jora Ghar (where shoes of the devotees kept),construction of duct,re-routing of sewage and water supply lines has started. In addition,work on constructing an alternative toilet block has also been taken up,said Deputy Commissioner K S Pannu,who held an inspection at the plaza.
Govt directs contractors to register workers
CHANDIGARH: In the light of the the Supreme Court decision,the Punjab government has directed all building contractors involved in construction works of the government to register their workers with the Labour Welfare Board,so that they could get due benefits from the Boards various schemes. Stating this on Tuesday,a government spokesman said that instructions had already been issued to all departments to take immediate action in compliance with the Supreme Court directive in this matter. The state government has also directed to send one per cent cess collected under Section 3 of the Building and Other Construction Labour Welfare Cess Act within a month in the from of a bank draft in the name of Punjab Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Board,Chandigarh. The field staff of the department can also be contacted in this regard,the spokesman added. He added that construction work being undertaken on contract by government departments should also register themselves as main employer of the contract labour under Section 7 of Regulation and Abolition Act-1970 and license as a contractor should be taken under Section 23 of the above act.
Youths asked to come out and vote
CHANDIGARH: Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab,Kusumjit Sidhu,has made a fervent appeal to the people in general and youth in the age group of 18-19 years in particular to enroll themselves as voters and submit required details to prepare their voter identity cards well in time. In a statement issued on Tuesday,Sidhu said that enrollment of eligible voters was of utmost important keeping in view the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. In spite of the tireless efforts of the voters registration officers,about 18 per cent eligible voters could not be registered as per the voter list of January 1,she added. Only 15 per cent of the youth in the age group of 18-19 years could be enrolled.
