CoE appointment legal: HPU-VC
Shimla: Breaking his silence over the controversy building up on the campus,Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University Professor S K Gupta said on Wednesday the appointment of former college principal Naresh Kumar Mahajan as Controller of Examinations of the university was as per the law. Allegations of the Joint Action Committee of university employees are totally unfounded as the appointment of the COE is as per the provisions in the University Act,statutes and ordinances, the V-C said in a statement released on Wednesday.
Court summons to UPA chief on price hike
Chandigarh: A lower court of Chandigarh has issued summons to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on a petition filed by local lawyer Arvind Thakur on the issue of price hike. Thakur contended that the UPA alliance had miserably failed to contain the hike in prices of basic commodities.
Two gangs busted in Jalandhar
Jalandhar: The Jalandhar police claimed to have busted two gangs of robbers. SSP (Rural) Ashish Chuadhary said a gang of four people,including a woman,was held and they were involved in nearly 60 cases of robbery and murder in Doaba region and Ludhiana district. According to police,this gang used to loot women at gunpoint. The police recovered stolen articles worth Rs 17 lakh from them. In another case,the CIA staff of Jalandhar arrested four members of a gang and recovered seven stolen vehicles.
Suicide bid by couple; girl dies,boy serious
Amritsar: An unmarried couple from Kidiyan village in Tarn Taran district tried to commit suicide on Wednesday by consuming a poisonous substance. While the girl,Mandeep Kaur,died on the spot,the condition of the boy,Sukhjinder Singh,is serious. According to the police,they took the decision because Sukhjinders wedding had been fixed elsewhere.
