AMRITSAR: In a high-level meeting of the Khalsa College Charitable Society,it was decided that the college will continue with its normal functions during the current academic session. The meeting was presided over by Society president Satyajit Singh Majithia. The committee also made it clear that the process of admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses will continue in the existing format as per guidelines of the Guru Nanak Dev University. “The committee unanimously resolved that whole-hearted efforts will be made to build consensus in the community towards the fulfillment of the aspirations of the Sikh community to have its own independent university under the Khalsa College Society,Amritsar’,” stated a press release issued by the college management.

Child dies after being hit by a bus

JALANDHAR: A two-year-old boy died while his mother and grandfather sustained injuries when their motorcycle was hit by a DPS school bus on Friday morning. Inspector Jasbir Singh Randhawa of Basti Bawa Khel police station said the driver of the school bus,Vikramjeet,has been arrested and booked under Sections 279,304 (A) of the IPC. The deceased has been identified as Ankush.

Eco-rickshaws flagged off

AMRITSAR: Deputy Commissioner Kahan Singh Pannu on Friday inaugurated the third batch of eco-rickshaw cabs. So far,80 rickshaws have been delivered to the beneficiaries under the scheme,which was started to ensure comfort,safety and security of tourists in the “holy city”. At the same time,the scheme also provides rickshaws to the needy at easy installments with help from banks. These rickshaws can carry two adults and two children comfortably and are fitted with FM radios,dustbins,magazine holders and first aid boxes. The owner has to shell out Rs 10,900 for a rickshw — he has to deposit Rs 500 and the rest he gets in the form of a bank loan. “So far,advertisers have put up ads on 60 rickshaws,resulting in an extra source of income,” said Pannu.

Call centre for poll complaints

CHANDIGARH: According to the directions of Election Commission of India,a call centre has been set up at the office of the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer in Chandigarh to receive complaints regarding electoral rolls from the general public. A spokesman said that anyone can register his complaint regarding electoral rolls or any other complaint related to election matters on telephone number 0172-2701910.

Fake currency siezed,one arrested

AMRITSAR: The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) officers on Friday arrested one Harbir Singh alias Beera — a resident of Bhindian Saidan — and recovered fake currency to the tune of Rs 10.45 lakh,along with six pistols and cartridges. SSOC Assitant Inspector General Manminder Singh said that following a tip-off,they apprehended the accused from Ghumanpura near Railway Fatak at Basarke. The consignment had been smuggled from Pakistan recently.
