Travel agent robbed of Rs 12 lakh

Amritsar: Jaspreet Singh,who runs a travel agency in Amritsar,was robbed of Rs 12 lakh and a laptop computer on Monday. He was going to the Celebration Mall on Batala Road and had stopped to park his car when the robbers broke the glasses of one of the windows and fled with two bags containing the cash and the laptop. The police said they were investigating the matter and were in the process of registering an FIR.

Revision of photo electoral rolls

Chandigarh: Chief Electoral Officer of Punjab Kusumjit Sidhu said summary revision of photo electoral roll as per qualifying the date of January 1,2011,would start soon. She said the campaign for photo voter I-card that started from October 4 would continue till October 19 for those whose photo was not in the rolls published on September 15. She appealed to all the citizens and political parties to cooperate the election machinery to achieve 100 per cent target of photo electoral rolls.

GNDU Academic Council meeting

Amritsar: Credit based evaluation system will be made mandatory from the next academic session of 2011-12 at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). The decision was taken at the GNDU Academic Council meeting here on Monday.

The council also approved the changed syllabi for different faculties in the various courses being run at the university and its affiliated colleges. Vice-Chancellor Prof A S Brar presided over the meeting,which was attended by Registrar

Dr Inderjit Singh and Dean,Academic Affairs,Prof Surinder Singh. Earlier,the V-C welcomed Dr S S Johl,Deputy Chairman,Planning Commission,Government of Punjab; Manmohan Singh,former IAS officer; and Dr Inderjit Kaur,president,

Maheshinder Grewal criticises Khangura

Ludhiana: Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary Maheshinder Singh Grewal lashed out at Qila Raipur MLA Jasbir Singh Khangura on Monday for advising four-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal regarding the choice of finance minister. In a statement,Grewal said Khangura was a novice in politics and did not know the fundamentals of parliamentary democracy. He said Khangura must know that choosing or retaining a minister and allocating a portfolio to the person was the sole prerogative of a chief minister.

PSEB engineers to launch stir against PSPCL management & govt from Oct 13

Patiala: The PSEB Engineers’ Association has decided to launch a state- wide agitation from October 13,against the management of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and the state government for not fulfilling the assurances given by the chief minister at the time of unbundling of the board in April. All engineers will wear black badges as a mark of protest and observe October 13 as ‘protest day’. From October 15 ,they will stage demonstrations at zonal headquarters. In a statement issued on Monday,the association said the chief minister had assured that a tripartite agreement would be signed to protect their service conditions and maintain the existing difference of pay scales of PSEB engineers vis-a-vis their counterparts in the Punjab government. But no action was taken on this other assurances,which forced them to take the path of agitation,said the statement.
