BJP recommends Heera Negi as primary education panel chief

Negi's name has now been recommended as chairperson of the primary education committee by the BJP-led municipal corporation.

EVEN AS some BJP leaders had claimed that Heera Negi, the party’s candidate for the mayor’s post in 2015, had lost the polls because she was ‘not highly educated,’ her name has now been recommended as chairperson of the primary education committee by the BJP-led municipal corporation.

Emphasising on educational qualifications as one of the key ‘qualities’, the BJP had in January raised questions over the qualifications of Congress candidate Mukesh Bassi, barely two days ahead of the Mayoral poll in 2016. BJP general secretary Chander Shekhar, in a press conference at the party office in sector 33, had said Heera Negi lost because she was less educated, which was one of the key criteria on the basis of which nominated councillors had to vote. An upset Negi had approached MP Kirron Kher ‘complaining’ about the statement.

Heera Negi claimed that she was a Class XII pass. “I have passed Class XII. Even otherwise I have been recommended as chairperson of the primary education panel,” said Negi.

Asked about Shekhar’s statement, she said, “You must ask the party leaders why they made such a statement. During that time, when this statement was made by them I had told that whatever I have to say I will tell my party leaders only and not make it public.”

Mayor Arun Sood refused to comment on the issue.

Most of the councillors found place in the civic committees and sub-committees as per their expertise. Dr Amrit Tewari has been made a member of the primary health committee, while Surinder Bahga, an architect has been recommended as the chairman of road committee. Surprisingly, nominated councillor Aruna Goel who is a professor and was nominated to the civic body to offer expertise in the field of education, figures nowhere in the primary education committee. She has been made a member of the arts, culture and sports committee, sanitation committee and women empowerment committee.

Congress Chief Pardeep Chahbra said, “It (BJP) is a double-faced party. They criticise their own councillor and later then oblige her.”
