(@fatehbajwa2/X)A controversy erupted over the unveiling of a statue of Bhagat Singh at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Mohali after BJP leaders threatened to hold a march to the airport alleging a delay on the part of the AAP-led Punjab Government.
BJP leader Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa said in a video message on X that the saffron party had given an “ultimatum” to the Government to unveil Bhagat Singh’s statute and that the 72-hour period would end on Monday.
“We will march to the airport with common people and unveil the statue, we had requested the state government but it was not done, then we gave an ultimatum which will end on Monday (December 2),” Bajwa said.
The unveiling of the statue was scheduled for September 28, on the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh, but it was postponed because of the model code of conduct in place for the panchayat elections.
Earlier, the airport was known as Chandigarh International Airport. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had taken the initiative to get the airport named after the legendary freedom fighter. The AAP made it an issue in the 2022 Assembly elections.
The airport was established during the tenure of the SAD-BJP government and international flight operations commenced in 2016.
