The Delhi Polices Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested leading industrialist Dr A S Bindra on charges of cheating, fraud and forgery on Thursday evening. Bindra was picked up in connection with two cases registered against him in November 2006 and February 2007 at the Connaught Place police station in New Delhi.
The arrest follows a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a Delhi court a few days ago. Bindra, father of ace shooter Abhinav Bindra,is the managing director of Punjab Meats Limited,Dera Bassi.
According to the two FIRs registered against Bindra,he had allegedly committed fraud with a Delhi-based private financial company,Apple India,to the tune of Rs 4.31 crore and with the IndusInd Bank to the tune of Rs 5 crore.
Apple India told the EOW that they had extended a loan of Rs 3 crore in Bindras favour. While paying it back,Bindra gave them five cheques of Canara Banks Janpath branch, but the account numbers did not tally.
Bindra failed to re-issue the cheques due to which the loan amount accumulated to Rs 4.31 crore, including penal interest. The company then lodged a complaint against him with the police, following which a criminal case was registered.
In the second case,Bindra allegedly mortgaged an agricultural land, located in Dera Bassi, with the IndusInd Bank against a loan of Rs 5 crore on March 27,1996. Keeping the bank in the dark,Bindra sold the land without clearing the loan. A case in this regard was registered in February 2007.
Both the cases were under investigation since. A Delhi court had issued non-bailable warrants against Bindra on May 10,on a plea filed by the Delhi Police, expressing their inability to reach him. The police had sought his custodial interrogation and the court instructed the police to execute the warrants within a weeks time.
A team of Delhi Polices EOW,headed by Sub-Inspector Sanjiv Kumar, contacted the Mohali police on Thursday evening and raided Bindra Farms in Zirakpur.
As Bindra was arrested and being taken to Delhi,he complained of acute chest pain, following which he was taken GMCH-32. Though his ECG was normal, the doctors were examining him till the filing of the report.
We had registered two separate cases of cheating and forgery against Bindra. Once his role was ascertained,a city court issued a non-bailable warrant against him on May 10, said Rajan Bhagat, spokesman,Delhi Police.
The police said the accused had not been attending court hearings and evading investigations and arrest, adding formalities to bring Bindra to Delhi were being completed. He would be produced in court on Friday.
