Accusing Advocate Arvind Thakur of bringing a bad name to the fraternity,the District Bar Association (DBA) on Tuesday cancelled his membership of the local Bar. The Association also moved a complaint before the UT police seeking registration of an FIR against Thakur under Arms Act for carrying live cartridges in the court complex. To demonstrate security lapses on the premises of District Court Complex,Thakur had taken live cartridges inside the Court on Monday.
Strong resentment was expressed by the members of the local bar today after they objected to frisking and questioning by Chandigarh police security personnel at the entry gates of the UT District Courts,Sector 17,Chandigarh. Peeved,the lawyers pulled down Thakurs name board and even threw away his chair and desk after passing a resolution to debar him from the membership of Bar Association. Work also was affected for over two hours due to the protest lodged by the lawyers. Amar Singh Chahal,President of the local Bar,confirmed the development stating that an emergent house meeting was called wherein it was unanimously decided to debar Thakur.
Police officials said the investigation has started. No case was registered till the filing of this report. When contacted,Advocate Arvind Thakur said lawyers were pressuring him to withdraw a public interest litigation (PIL) which he had filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court last month. In the PIL,Thakur had demanded action against district court lawyers who have not paid their electricity bills. Thakur added that he has not been issued any show-cause notices by the District Bar before debarring him from the local bar. Thakur said he had also filed a complaint against lawyers who removed his chair and damaged his name board.
