Ban on water wastage: Only one challan,541 notices issued in 9 days

In nine days since the Municipal Corporation issued ban on washing cars and courtyards, and watering lawns in the morning, the civic body has issued only one challan so far.

In nine days since the Municipal Corporation issued ban on washing cars and courtyards, and watering lawns in the morning, the civic body has issued only one challan so far. Though notices have been issued in abundance, these fail to serve as a deterrent as water continues to be wasted.

The civic body began checks from April 1,and 13 teams visit different sectors between 5.30 am and 8.30 am to issue notices to violators. Those found wasting water are being issued notices. If the offence is repeated,a challan is issued and a fine of Rs 500 is imposed, which is added to the water bill.

Councillor Anju Beniwala says untill the Municipal Corporation takes stringent action, people will not realise they are wasting water. “The checks need to be increased. There is blatant wastage of water. I have been receiving complaints from residents. Only notices will not serve the purpose. There are some who do not receive adequate water, while others are watering lawns. There need to be stricter laws,” says Beniwala.

The civic body has issued 541 notices since April 1. Nearly 62 notices were issued on Friday. Of these,16 were for washing vehicles,17 for watering lawns and the remaining for wasting water by other means.

Councillor Rajesh Gupta is also in favour of stricter measures. He says,“There is a need to change the bylaws. Untill strict action is not taken, wastage of water will continue. In fact, maximum defaulters are in the so called VIP sectors. People water their sprawling lawns. Officials are scared of issuing challans to them.”

“Complaints of low water pressure and lack of water supply have been pouring in. The habitual offenders should be dealt with strictly,” he adds.

Officials, meanwhile, say notices are issued for first time violators according to the bylaws as it aims to create awareness.
