(Express Photo)Residents of Badi village in Mohali Block have unanimously rejected a proposal by panchayat department officials to pass a resolution for selling their 28 acres of shamlat (common) land near the Airport Road through open auction.
A special gram sabha meeting, chaired by Sarpanch Harmeet Kaur, witnessed massive participation from villagers along with representatives of farmers’ unions. Despite being informed, the panchayat secretary did not attend to record proceedings, after which the responsibility of writing the resolution was given to Didar Singh, a graduate youth of the village.
The written resolution stated that on August 26, 2025, a meeting was called by the DDPO Mohali regarding shamlat lands, in which Badi Panchayat also participated. Officials had then asked the panchayat to pass a resolution allowing the sale of its common land through open bidding. However, the villagers declared, “The Gram Sabha outrightly rejects this proposal, as panchayat land is essential for the village’s development.”
The resolution bore signatures of Sarpanch Harmeet Kaur, Labh Kaur, Gurpratap Singh, Sant Ram (Panch member), as well as Numberdar Bahadur Singh, Darbara Singh, Avtar Singh, and many other residents.
On August 26, the DDPO had held a joint meeting of panchayats from 17 villages of Mohali block to discuss selling shamlat land. Following widespread opposition, the DDPO issued a clarification on August 28, denying any such directive.
