To ease traffic jams,the Chandigarh Traffic Police on Monday decided to stop the manual system of operating traffic lights during peak hours.
From Tuesday onwards,all traffic signals on the Madhya Marg will operate as per the automatic system of traffic lights. The Traffic Police has decided to revert to the old system on a trial basis as it has been observed that the manual system results in jams and clogging of roads.
Traffic lights at the Fun Republic Light Point,Housing Board Light point,Railway Light point,Transport Light Point and Press Light point on the Madhya Marg will operate as per the old system.
The department has decided to stop the manual system wherein a traffic cops used to manage traffic.
All these traffic lights will operate during peak hours as well. As per the manual system,the traffic lights used to be switched off and a police man on all four sides of an intersection used to manage the traffic keeping in view the rush of vehicles.
A traffic policeman was deployed at all the traffic light points on the Madhya Marg to manage the heavy flow of traffic coming from four sides at an intersection. The traffic police would adjust time provided for vehicles to pass according to the volume of traffic.
