Chandigarh: A passenger of a three-wheeler was killed when a CTU bus hit the vehicle near Sukhna Bridge on Wednesday. Prem Narain,a resident of Chaujashi village,reported that the CTU bus hit his three wheeler and an unknown passenger was seriously injured and admitted to PGI,where doctor declared him dead on arrival. The driver of the bus was arrested and later released on on bail.

Cops step up vigil to check betting

Panchkula: A day after the Panchkula Police busted a gang that was involved in betting during the India England ODI match,Panchkula police has stepped up its vigil to check betting. “After we arrested four persons in Panchkula for gambling over the ODI played in New Delhi,we suspect that there may be more similar groups active here,” said a police officer in Panchkula. The third ODI between India and England is being played on Thursday at Mohali.

Nursing students continue protest

Chandigarh: The nursing students of PGI continued their protest against the internal assessment awarded to them by their teachers. The students of the National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE),PGI had alleged that their results,have been manipulated by their teachers in the wake of their protests about unhygienic food being served to them and limited timings for outings in the evening. The students gathered near the director’s office on Wednesday. The issue was resolved only in the evening with the intervention of Dr Y K Chawla,PGI Director who assured them that their demands would be looked. The students had alleged that out of 170 students,over 90 students had not been awarded passing marks,47 received supplementaries and four were asked to repeat the whole year.

Two more cases of dengue,total 29

Chandigarh: Two fresh cases of dengue were reported from the city,on Wednesday,taking the tally to 29 cases in this season. One of the case has been reported from PGI residential area and the patient is being treated at PGI. The other is from Sector 35 and has been admitted to a private hospital.

Excise raid on gold jeweller

Chandigarh: The UT Excise and Taxation Department acting on a tip off,conducted a raid on AV Jewellers in Sector 22 on suspicion of evasion of VAT,on Wednesday. A team of officials reached the shop at 12 noon and seized a laptop,ledgers and draft bills pertaining to the sale of jewellery. The team also checked gold items for purity. They also took possession of about 1.5 kg of gold which their employee had brought in while the raid was on. The team allowed the owner to keep the gold after taking an undertaking from him.

‘Circus stunt show too dangerous’

Chandigarh: A city-based advocate has lodged a complaint with the UT Administration against a stunt show ‘Maruti Car Circus’ at a fair in Sector 34. The complaint states that there are chances of the vehicles falling inside the well,resulting in explosion which could be dangerous to the life of spectators as well as the riders. The complainant further states that engines of the motor cycles or cars used in such performances are reportedly modified which make a lot of noise pollution under which it is difficult to hear any other sound and may cause inconvenience and annoyance to the visitors.

Campaign on safe Diwali

Chandigarh:The Environment Society of Post Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 11,organised a two-day awareness campaign on a safe and pollution-free Diwali. Activities from slogan writing competition on cracker-free Diwali to lecture on environment pollution by Tejinder Kaur and an anti-cracker rally around the college and outer roads of Sector 11 were organised on Tuesday and Wednesday.
