Civic body logs on to Facebook to connect with residents
To connect with city residents,the Municipal Corporation will now make its presence felt on social network site Facebook. The page will act as an interface between the residents,officials and councillors. Residents can lodge complaints and share views on the page,www.facebook.com/MunicipalCorporationChandigarh. In case they have any problem with the development work being undertaken or about civic amenities,they can post their complaints online. Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh said the department concerned would be asked to rectify the problems within 15 days.
Anand Marriage Act an eyewash
Anand Marriage Act Amendment Bill 2008,which has the consent of the Sikh members of Parliament and also approved by the SGPC,is merely an eyewash. This is once again going to re-confirm the controversial Article 25(b) of the Constitution,which recognises Sikhs as part of Hindus, alleged a local SGPC member,Hardeep Singh. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday,Singh argued: Different religious and political parties are trying to pose themselves as the champion for this amendment and terming it as an achievement,but they are not considering it seriously. The half-page Anand Marriage Act,1909,which is a part of the broader Hindu Marriage Act,simply considers a marriage solemnised as per Anand Sanskar as legitimate,but legally it is a Hindu marriage.
Man convicted for murder of brother
A lower court of Chandigarh on Tuesday convicted a man on charges of murdering his brother in 2009. Om Prakash,a resident of Sector 38 (West),Chandigarh,has been held guilty under Section 304(2) of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Wednesday. On July 10,2009,accused Om Parkash and his brother Manoj were consuming liquor and discussing a property,which was in the name of their mother. Following a heated argument,Om Parkash attacked Manoj with an iron rod. Manoj was taken to hospital,where he was declared dead on arrival.
Cyclist run over by bus
Ranjit Singh,a migrant daily wager in his mid-20s,was crushed to death by a recklessly driven bus on the Mohali-Kharar National Highway-21 near Balongi village,the police said here on Tuesday. Ranjit,who was from Uttar Pradesh and was staying in Sector 52,Chandigarh,was going to work in Kharar on a bicycle around 9.30 am when a speeding Punjab Roadways bus,coming from behind,ran over him,investigating officer Bhagat Ram said. The victim was rushed to PGI where he succumbed to injuries. The police have booked the bus driver,Swaran Singh,for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
New fire station soon near Capitol Complex
In the wake of recent incidents of fire,the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation will set up a fire station near the Capitol Complex to ensure quick reaction. This was decided in a meeting on Tuesday. The fire in the record room at Punjab and Haryana High Court had caused extensive damage to the records.
Councillors husband in police remand
Panchkula district courts sent Manish Gupta,husband of Congress councillor Bhavna Gupta,to one-day police remand in connection with a dowry case on Tuesday. He was arrested on Monday. Bhavna councillor from ward number 10 had filed a complaint at the Sector 14 police station against her husband,father-in-law Amrit Pal and brother-in-law Nitin Gupta,alleging that they demanded dowry from her parents and beat her up.
Black marketing: LPG dealers warned
The district administration has taken strict measures to curb black marketing of LPG cylinders. In a meeting with 18 gas dealers,Deputy Commissioner S P Srow asked them to regularise the distribution of cylinders within seven days,or else he will take necessary action.
St Kabir boy tops in Maths Olympiad
A Class V student of St Kabir Public School,Shreyas Chandgothia,bagged the first position nationally and came 38th internationally in the fourth International Maths Olympiad (IMO) held in December,2010. He also topped the list of Indian students who qualified for IMOs second level. Shreyas has scored 99.94 per cent to beat over 72,000 students who appeared from India. Over six lakh Class V students had appeared for IMO from all over the world. Shreyas is a three-time national champion in Brainobrain Abacus Competitions,which is based on the Chinese system of mental mathematics. The Science Olympiad Foundation will award him the School Maths Genius Award.
Rose Fest: Photo contest winners declared
The entries of photography competition of Rose Festival 2011 were judged at the Chandigarh College of Architecture,Sector 12,on Tuesday. The judges were Swadesh Talwar,Prem Singh,Navneet Saxena and Trilochan Singh. A total of 66 entries were received in two categories.
