Expired milk powder bags seized
Dera Bassi: Thousands of expired milk powder bags were recovered in a raid conducted by the Department of Health and Family Welfare at the unit of Milk Specialities Limited at Ghollumajra village near Dera Bassi on Thursday. The powder was being used in the production of milk in the plant,said officials of the department. They also collected the samples of milk,curd,cheese,sweets and ghee being manufactured from the plant under the brand name of Milk Time. The raiding team comprised District Health Officer Dr Jai Singh and District Food Inspector Aditi Gupta and their juniors. They found thousands of milk powder bags that had expired over a year ago. Manager of the company Yuvi Singh,however,said the milk powder was not expired but since they did not have fresh bags the stock was kept in old bags. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Puneet Goyal said orders had been issued to seize all expired bags,which would be disposed of after approval from the higher authorities.
266 get degrees at Punjabi Univ convocation
Patiala: A total of 266 degrees and medals were awarded at Punjabi Universitys 34th convocation on Friday. Of them,149 students got their PhD degrees in different disciplines. Addressing the gathering at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall of the university,Punjab Governor and Punjabi University Chancellor Shivraj Patil called upon the students to rely on positive attitude and draw greater and deeper meanings of life than what was available in the books and classrooms. Real knowledge comes from within,but universities can play a vital role by collecting,analysing and distributing knowledge and wisdom on a larger scale, he said. Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh awarded the degrees of MPhil and gold medals to toppers in professional,postgraduate and undergraduate courses. Patil conferred the degree of DLitt (honoris causa) upon noted theatre artist Gursharan Singh. N G Rajurkar,Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Osmania University,and K S Chugh,Professor Emeritus of Nephrology at PGI,were honoured with DLitt and DSc (honoris causa),respectively. Higher Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan was the chief guest.
Anti-encroachment drive in Sector 17
Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation conducted an anti-encroachment drive at Sector 17 on Friday. As many as 52 challans were issued. Focus was on the area around Bank Square where vendors selling a variety of items can be seen occupying the corridors.
Pen-down strike by CHB employees
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Housing Board Employees Coordination Committee held a pen-down-tool-down strike and staged a protest on the board premises. Apart from staff members,leaders from CTU,Punjab and UT Employees Joint Action Committee,Coordination Committee of UT and MC Employees also addressed the protesters. The CHB chairman held a meeting with the representatives of the coordination committee where the employees highlighted their demands. A list of their demands was submitted with the chairman. A general body meeting of the committee has been called on January 5 for deciding further course of action
City marks National Consumer Rights Day
Chandigarh: Various organisations in the city observed National Consumer Rights Day on Friday. The Citizens Awareness Group marked the day on the theme of price rise. Speakers said policies of the government were responsible for the steep hike in prices,especially of onions and tomatoes. They decided to submit a memorandum to the Chandigarh Administration highlighting the issue. An open house session for consumer awareness was organised by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Senior General Manager Naresh Sharma met consumers and briefed them about the grievance redressal mechanism in BSNL. All branches of the State Bank of India are observing a National Consumer Week with the theme Consumers! Discharge your Responsibilities: Assert Your Rights from December 24 to 30.
Orientation course concludes at PU
Chandigarh: The 88th Orientation Course conducted by the UGC-Academic Staff College concluded on the Panjab University campus on Friday. As many as 53 assistant professors coming from higher educational institutes of seven states and belonging to 27 different disciplines attended the four-week programme aimed to enhance the classroom skills of teachers. Chief guest Prof B S Dahiya,former vice-chancellor,Kurukshetra University,asked teachers to raise their voice against commercialisation of the education sector. Prof Shelley Walia,Director,Academic Staff College,too,spoke on the occasion.
7-year-old run over by bus
Ambala: A seven-year-old school boy,Kamaldeep,died after he was run over by a Haryana Roadways bus near Ballana village on the Ambala-Hisar road on Friday. The incident occurred when the boy was going to school. He died on the spot. The police have booked the driver of the bus.
Alumni meet of UIPS
Chandigarh: The Panjab University Pharmaceutical Society (PUPS) organised a class reunion meet of B Pharma graduates of Diamond (1950),Golden (1960) and Silver (1985) Jubilee years and the annual function in the university auditorium on Friday. The function was inaugurated by chief guest and Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Soti. He felicitated alumni Professor Harkishan Singh and Dr B D Miglani. The 37th Volume of Pharmacos,an annual publication of PUPS,was released on the occasion.
