The CBI on Tuesday filed a cancellation report in a case registered against four police officers booked on charges of murder of Head Constable Manmohan Singh alias Mohni’s,at the police headquarters in 2005. Manmohan Singh,42,had died after he fell from the fifth floor of the police headquarters on September 3,2005. His family members had alleged some members of the crime branch were responsible for Singh’s death. The UT police officers who were booked included S-I Sukhdeep Singh,ASI Desh Raj,Head Constable Balbir Singh,Constable Rajinder and two civilians Narinder Singh of Mohali,and Balwan. The alleged suspects were booked following directions of the apex court in December 2009. The case was being investigated by the special crime branch of CBI,Chandigarh.

Former MC official gets 2 years in jail
A local court on Tuesday awarded two years’ imprisonment to former senior assistant of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation in a graft case. A case under Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against Suraj Bhan in 2006. The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Gurbir Singh imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on the guilty. On August 30,2006,the Vigilance department had caught senior assistant of the Municipal Corporation,Suraj Bhan,while ‘accepting’ a bribe of Rs 1,000 from a Mani Majra resident.

ATM cloning: A week on,FIR registered
A week after the UT police started receiving complaints of fraudulent withdrawals of money from SBI ATM’s,an FIR was lodged on Tuesday against the unknown accused. A case of forgery and cheating under Sections 420,467,468,471 of the IPC was registered at the Sector-17 police station. The case was registered by the Crime Branch of the police which is now investigating the case with assistance. The police have received as many as 20 complaints from various account holders of the SBI and the total figure of loss of money in this cloning fraud has mounted to over Rs 8 lakh.

Railway engineer caught accepting bribe
The Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI,Chandigarh,on Tuesday registered a case under Prevention of Corruption Act against Ashish Yadav,Section Engineer,Indian Railways,Ambala Cantt. on the basis of a complaint. The complainant of the case works in a Mumbai-based company that deals in transportation of goods. The complainant alleged that his company had submitted an application to the Divisional Railway Manager,Northern Railway,Ambala Cantt on August 18 seeking permission for traffic and power shutdown for crossing of their loaded trailers at Ropar-Ghanavli Railway Section. The complainant approached Ashish Yadav,Section Engineer for the said purpose. Yadav reportedly demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 in lieu of facilitating the request. On the basis of the said complaint,a case was registered against Ashish Yadav and a trap was laid today. Yadav was reportedly caught red handed while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs 40,000. Yadav has been arrested and search is being conducted at his office and residential premises.

Woman dies in road accident
A 65-year-old woman died after she was run over by a schoolbus in Bapu Dham Colony on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Kalima. The accident took place around 1 pm when the woman was going towards the market. A recklessly driven bus belonging to Sacred Heart School hit her. The police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the driver Mahinder Singh. He was arrested and later bailed out.

MC approves laying of paver blocks
Chandigarh: The MC has approved agenda items worth more than Rs 2 crore pertaining to laying of paver blocks in various sectors. The decisions were approved in a meeting of the Roads Committee of the civic body held today. Paver blocks would be laid near hockey stadium in Sector 18,outside Shiv Mandir in Sectors 19,22,35,45,29,40 and 43,among others.
