Boy killed in road accident
Ambala
: A 12-year-old boy was killed and his father injured when their motorcycle was knocked down by a rashly driven tractor near Talheri T-point under the Barara police station. Rajan Sharma died on the spot while his father Gaurav Sharma was rushed to the MM Hospital in Mullana. The tractor driver escaped after the accident. The police have registered a case.

Two-day seminar on rural India begins
Chandigarh
: A University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored two-day national conference on ‘Rural India in a Global Village:Issues and Perspectives’,organised by the Department of Sociology of Post-Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 11. The session was inaugurated on Tuesday. Professor Yogendra Singh,Professor Emeritus,Jawaharlal Nehru University,Delhi,was the chief guest and also delivered the key-note address. Professor S L Sharma,sociologist and former Dean,Panjab University and Mahinder Kumar,General Manager,NABARD,Punjab,were the guests of honour on the occasion. More than one 150 delegates from across the country are participating in the conference. Dr Nirupama Luthra,Head of Department,Sociology Department and Convener of the conference welcomed the guests.

UNO Day celebrated at Patiala school

: To acquaint the students with United Nations Organization,UNO day was celebrated in DAV Public School,Patiala with verve and enthusiasm. Various activities like quiz competition,draw and colour flag’s of UNO member countries and placard making with aims,programmes and activities were organized in the school premises to mark this day. Over 800 students participated in different activities. To spread the message of the ‘peace’ the most desirable role of the UNO ‘Peace March’ from the school to Thapar University was organized by the students of 7th class. Students held Placards and raised slogans to save the environment and restore the peace.

Dhindsa is PUSU chairman

: During the General Body meeting of Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) on Tuesday,Hardev Singh Dhindsa from the Department of Philosophy was unanimously elected the new chairman of the party. Dhindsa assured the students that he will stand by them and work hard for the uplift of the organisation.

Workshop on pregnancy management held

: LifeCell International,India’s first and largest stem cell bank conducted a workshop on pregnancy management with Dr Rashmi Bawa,an antenatal specialist today. This interactive and educative session gave insight into various topics related to pregnancy and tips on happy motherhood. The antenatal specialist highlighted the importance of breathing exercises and also demonstrated few of the exercises which would help the pregnant women during labour. The breathing exercises are designed in a manner that will help you feel comfortable and relax during the delivery of a child by creating a balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide within the body. Practicing breathing exercises will help you feel comfortable with the techniques when the time comes. Dr Bawa informed the participants that good nutrition during pregnancy,and enough of it,is very important for the baby to grow and develop. The specialist recommended pregnant women to eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients required by the body.

Special lecture on social science held

: A special lecture on “Social Sciences in India in the Era of Globalisation” by Professor Yogendra Singh,Professor Emeritus of Sociology,Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi,was organized by the ICSSR North -Western Regional Centre in collaboration with the Department of Sociology,Panjab University.

Professor Singh while speaking stated that he had chosen this topic due to the deep concern that had arisen out of the crisis currently confronting social sciences. Initially from 1950s to 70s social sciences went through the consensus period since social scientists were in complete consonance with the state. Later,social scientists began to be recognized as partners in the process of social transformation. Lately,social sciences have indigenised,especially the Marxism that itself got diversified within the indigenous framework. Thus from a consensual social science it moved on to a critical social science. Even the course curriculum of social sciences in American society were restructured towards criticality. Ever since emergency in mid 70s,social scientists in India got diversified in terms of their alliance with the state.

VAT hike: BJP gives thumbs down

: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) condemned the UT Administration for increasing the Value Added Tax by one per cent point and demanded its immediate withdrawal. At a meeting of the traders cell,it was discussed that the Administration was collecting huge revenue by way of VAT,while the budget is already surplus.

The BJP Traders Cell also demanded that the VAT on essential commodities i.e. Foodgrains,Rice,Pulses,Atta,Vanaspati and Refined Oil should be decreased from 4 per cent to 2 per cent to curb the inflation. Besides this the traders should be given facilities so as to enhance the business in the city which would automatically fetch more revenue for the Administration. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of its convener Ram Karan Gupta.

Three cops found absent from duty,suspension recommended
Ambala
: Three police officers including an ASI on the PCR duty in Naraingarh were found guilty of dereliction of duty during the night. The Naraingarh DSP Vinod Kumar who conducted surprise checking found that the three cops ASI Kul Bhushan,constables Balkar Singh and Ranjit Singh absent from patrolling duty. He recommended that they should be placed under suspension. They were found lacking of their duty in the wake of increasing incident of thefts in the town.

Three-day conference on space gets under way at Panchkula

: A three-day National Conference on Space and ISRO exhibition was inaugurated by celebrated space scientist and former chairman ISRO,Dr G Madhavan Nair here at Inderdhanush Auditorium. The space conference which is being organised by Dikshant Group of schools and supported by International Space Society and ISRO features 1500 students from various parts of the country. Nair,the chief guest for the occasion spoke about the ISRO’s future plans for Chandrayaan II and the plan to send man on the moon by 2020 and beyond. While speaking about the achievements of ISRO,he also lauded the efforts of International Space Society by organising National Conference on Space and the outreach program to reach the students.
