A marital dispute between gold medal-winning boxer Saweety Boora and her husband Deepak Hooda, former captain of the Indian Kabaddi team, reached the police in Hisar on Tuesday and Deepak was booked under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including voluntarily causing hurt, criminal breach of trust and criminal intimidation, based on the complaint lodged by his wife.

Deepak too lodged a complaint in Rohtak, accusing his wife’s family of torturing him mentally, of criminal intimidation and cheating. Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan said that an FIR was registered against Deepak at the women’s police station in Hisar on Tuesday evening. Hisar resident Saweety won a gold medal at the Women’s World Boxing Championships held in New Delhi in 2023, while Hooda, a Rohtak resident, was part of the Indian team which won the gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games. The couple got married in July 2022. Later, Deepak contested the 2024 Assembly elections on BJP ticket from Rohtak and was defeated.

In her complaint, Saweety said that her family spent nearly Rs 1 crore in “dowry”. “My father wanted to give a Creta car to Deepak, but just four days before the wedding, Deepak and his sister demanded a Fortuner SUV and my father was forced to take a loan of Rs 11.59 lakh,” she said.

She accused her in-laws of torturing, insulting and assaulting her “for more dowry”.

In his complaint to the Rohtak SP, Deepak said that Saweety left his home after she was honoured with the Arjuna Award on December 17, 2024. Deepak claimed that Saweety and her sister took away gold and cash worth lakhs from his Rohtak flat on February 3 when he was in Delhi. “On February 9, I went to her house in an attempt to improve our relationship, but her father and uncle abused me,” Deepak said.

Sources said Rohtak police had forwarded Hooda’s complaint to the Economic Offences Wing.
Saweety could not be reached for a comment, while Deepak refused to speak, calling it their family matter.
