There were no unsung heroes in the much-hyped taking over ceremony of Captain Amarinder Singh as the state president of the Congress on Friday. It was a day of reckoning for many others who got their share of limelight from singing praises for the Maharaja and better still, offering hefty cash rewards for poets.
Engaging a huge crowd getting restless from long wait for the Maharaja was Congressman Munshi Khan who sang couplets hailing the arrival of the new king. As the wait got longer, another poet held fort till the Maharaja finally arrived. And while humming on stage,Khan, almost made a fortune. MLAs and MPs,both who had lost or won, showered him with cash rewards, which Khan announced on stage thus marking their presence at the event. While most offered him between Rs 500 to Rs 1,000,O P Soni,Congress candidate from Amritsar in Lok Sabha polls, showed his generosity with a cash reward of Rs 11,000.
While some heroes sung their way to fame, others did so through banners. And it was a day when the face on each banner mattered. Several party workers managed to be seated inside the venue depending on which leaders face beamed on their banner. Several mightier ones tussled their way through while the not-so-lucky ones seemed content having the desi ghee ladoos.
Incidentally,it was the desi ghee ladoos that got the best publicity for Kharar MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu. His banners were stationed near his trucks distributing the ladoos, forget the numbers it was between 25 to 40 quintals, and stalls offering an equally sweet tea. His trucks moved about the entire stretch of road outside Congress Bhawan distributing the ladoos, where his tea stalls and water tankers were also stationed. However, when it came to the making his way through the unmanageable crowd, even Sidhus ladoos could do little. He finally jostled and jumped the fence to enter the VVIP enclosure through that reserved for mediapersons.
And talking of kings men,his controversial former media advisor B I S Chahal cannot be far behind. Resplendent in his green turban,Chahal too shoved his way to seat himself inside the VVIP enclosure. But there were exceptions to those eager to being seated where visible. Congress MLA from Abohar Sunil Jakhar walked his way to the eighth row after his father,Balram Jakhar was seated on the stage while event coordinator, former minister and Dakala MLA Lal Singh was seen sharing a chair on the front row.
But in terms of ingenuity,it was another Congress leader who made heads turn. He presented a figure of Hanuman carrying the sanjivani buti in a glass box to Amarinder as soon as he assumed the throne.
