The Mohali court Thursday extended the judicial custody of former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia until September 6 in connection with the disproportionate assets case registered against him by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

At the same time, the court adjourned the hearing on his petition seeking a change of barrack inside jail to August 30.

Majithia has been under judicial custody following his arrest by ED earlier this year. The central agency has accused him of possessing assets far beyond his known sources of income, while also linking the case to financial irregularities and alleged misuse of power during his tenure as a Punjab minister.

Representing the Punjab Government, Farry Sofat and Preetinderpal Singh submitted that the custody needed to be extended to complete ongoing legal procedures.

Meanwhile, the defence counsels D S Sobti and H S Dhanoa pressed for the supply of the chargesheet to prepare their case. The court accepted their plea, and directed that a copy of the chargesheet be handed over to them on September 2.

Majithia’s lawyers have consistently denied the allegations, calling them “politically motivated” and asserting that he has “full faith in the judiciary.
