For 11-year-old Mukul (name changed),it is a second shot at life. Mukul,a resident of Kotkapura in Faridkot district, was among 10 children who were found addicted to drugs and brought to the de-addiction center run by Red Cross Society. After 15-day treatment course, the children were handed over to their parents on Friday.
DC,Faridkot,Ravi Bhagat said,We had received information that some ant-social elements were supplying intoxicants to these children- all between 11 to 13 years old . Once hooked these children were used for petty crime and begging.
It was on August 16,that a team led by Roshan Lala Gupta, secretary,Red Cross Society, caught Mukul who then led them to the other children. The administration found that a racket was being run from a place near the Kotkapur Railway Station. While a police complaint was lodged with the SSP Faridkot, the children were brought to the de-addiction centre.
The children have promised that they will never go back to drugs and would inform their parents if someone forces them on the same path again. We will ensure that these children are admitted to schools and where parents can not afford their education the administration will step in, the DC said.
Meanwhile,a beaming Mukul said: I feel much better now. I want to study and will ensure that my parents send me to school. The doctors have told me that these drugs have a very bad effect on our body.
