Almost a year after the UT Police filed a chargesheet in court,nailing a professor of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH),Sector 32,for driving a student to suicide,a lower court framed charges against Dr N K Goel. The case was heard in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Rahul Garg on Friday. The charges against Goel,head of the Department of Community Medicine,GMCH-32,were framed under Section 306 of the IPC (abetment to suicide) and Section 3 (2) (vii) of the SC /ST Act. The chargesheet was filed on September 10 last year. Final year MBBS student Jaspreet Singh allegedly committed suicide on the college premises on January 28,2008. He had hanged himself from the ceiling fan of the hostel library. A suicide note was found which held the professor and two of his classmates responsible for his death. Based on the inquiry report submitted by a GMCH committee,the report of the Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory that had examined the suicide note and a re-evaluation of the exam papers of the deceased by a PGI board,Goel was accused of abetment to suicide. Jaspreet is survived by parents and three sisters.
