The Chandigarh Police rescued a child within hours after he was abducted from Bapu Dham colony,Sector 26,today. At around 2 pm,vegetable seller Dinesh complained at the Sector 26 police station that his son Prince, aged about two years, had been missing since 9 am. He also informed that he had received a ransom call of Rs 5 lakh on his phone at about 1:45 pm.
SHO Siri Prakash deciphered the call and dispatched a team of police personnel to the STD booth from where it had ostensibly been made. The team managed to procure the identity of the ransom caller and located him and an accomplice nearby.
The two youths,Amarpal (19) and Banwari (18),were overpowered and taken to the police station,Sector 26. On interrogation, they revealed that Prince had been taken to a guava orchard in Siswan forest near Mullanpur.
The crime team, which was formed in the meantime, raided the farm house but no one was there. It was then revealed that the boy had been further taken to somewhere between Bharatgarh and Una.
Amarpal and Banwari were then made to phone their accomplices, who were at Bharatgarh. They were made to believe that the ransom money had been received and that they should bring the child back to Chandigarh .
Enroute from Ropar a trap was laid and the kidnappers Suresh (20) and Surra (20),who were coming along with Prince, were caught. Since the kidnappers were driving a motorcycle at breakneck speed when they were apprehended by the police, the child fell on the road and received minor injuries on the forehead. He has been referred to PGI for being kept under observation, SSP Naunihal Singh said at a press conference.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Chandigarh Administration stood by the police in providing all possible assistance. At one point of time it was felt necessary to procure a helicopter to rush a police team to Una. The Home Secretary even coordinated with the Ministry of Defence and Air Officer Commanding (of 12 Wing,Air Force Station),Chandigarh,to keep a helicopter on stand-by, said IG P K Shrivastava.
Singh informed that the accused were from Moradabad ,Uttar Pradesh. More details will come out after further interrogation, He replied when asked whether the accused were habitual offenders. All the accused were vegetable vendors. The whole operation was conducted under DSP Satbir Singh.
