From a folding bicycle to a carbon bicycle and even an efficiency bicycle,the Bike Expo presented a wide variety of bikes to consumers. The variety of high-end models on display proved that bicycles are no longer a poor man’s ride now. The price range of high-end bicycles started from Rs 10,000 onwards and models worth more than Rs 50,000 were also present in the exhibition.The 3-day exhibition started today in the Government College for Women (GCW) grounds in which about 50 exhibitors from across the country came.

Avon Cycles launched their folding bike ‘carry on’ costing Rs 2871. The bike is aimed at fitness enthusiasts of different age groups. Another bicycle model,Rock Star,a bike costing Rs 3650,was also launched today.

Leader Bicycles presented its high-speed bicycle,which is equipped with disc brakes and a gear system and can achieve a speed of 30km/hour. Hi-Bird Cycles also launched their high-end bicycle models made of an aluminium alloy and equipped with gear boxes. Gurmeet Singh Kular,President of United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association said,“On the first day,dealers and visiotrs from Bangladesh and even Pakistan had come to see the expo,besides dealers from across the country. It is a great platform to get orders in plate and dealers get to know the latest varieties of their competitors as well.”

High-end rickshaw

THE rickshaw is now no longer a ‘poor’ man’s transport. Ludhiana-based Hi-Bird Cycles today launched a Super Luxury High-Tech Rickshaw on demand from five star hotels and resorts who wanted it to boost tourism. The company used to export this model in the German market for a price between EURO 2500 and 3000 which is approximately equivalent to Rs.1.5 lakh and 2 lakh. A similar model with some modifications was launched today and the price was in the range of Rs 25,000-Rs 30,000 per rickshaw. Unlike normal rickshaws,it is equipped with 21 gears,radio FM,a place for keeping water bottles amd a purse and much more,said Rajinder Sharma,MD of the company.

Carbon cycle

Hero Cycles launched a model of cycles,‘Urban Trail’,made with a carbon frame and priced at Rs 44,000. The cycle weighs only 12 kgs as compared to normal cycles which have steel frames and weigh around 25 kgs. In the international market,such lightweight cycles cost upward of Rs 1 lakh. Hero developed this model especially for Indian roads,said Pawan Munjal MD of Hero cycles.

Effi cycle

Students of Guru Nanak Engineering College displayed their Effi Cycle which looked more like a high-tech rickshaw. The model was battery cum manually operated. Team leader Jaskirat Singh,a final year Mechanical Engineering student said,“We made it as a part of our research in year 2011 and now we have displayed it here to get some suggestions for making it even better. It has disc breaks,a wish bone suspension system used in cars,adjustable seats and much more. The students received many inputs from the industrialists to make the model more efficient. The research model cost Rs 60,000 but once made in bulk will cost around Rs 15,000,said Sahil and Satyam,other team members.
