A day after the Panjab University Campus Student Council (PUCSC) elections concluded,a sense of calm prevailed in the campus. Saturday saw the elected Council representatives heading home to relax,while those staying behind were busy thanking their party supporters. The university declared Monday as a non-teaching day,giving the students an extended weekend.
The din and bustle on Friday was totally missing on campus on Saturday. The colourful party tents,the banners,the posters were all gone; what remained were a few party pamphlets littering the ground.
The poll fever is gone and things are back to normal: the atmosphere is very peaceful as most people are exhausted by now, said Ashu,a law student.
Friday night was one of merrymaking for the students; but most of the boarders of the girls hostels left for home on Saturday. Winning party members came to thank us for our votes. There were celebrations in all the hostels with music and dance,which continued till late in the night, said Anuradha,a boarder of Sarojini Hall.
For the winners,it was time to relax. I wanted to relax before my work begins on Monday, said the newly elected president,Gurindervir Singh Aulakh. Speaking about his post-election plans,he added: I plan to thank all PUSU supporters today,as I am extremely grateful for their votes. I am now determined to fulfil all promises made in the manifesto,and work for the well-being of the students.
PUSUs Subhash Chander,who has been elected as joint secretary,wanted to relax at home before going ahead with his agenda. I really want to create a positive atmosphere by striving for violence-free campus, said Chander.
He also expressed the desire to work for the benefit of the students of his department (Dental Sciences): I want to make sure our colleges are affiliated to the Dental Council of India.
For Akhil Bansal,the only SOPU-ABVP alliance candidate to make it to the PUCSC,victory was bitter sweet. I am very happy with my success,but I do not want to celebrate and hurt the sentiments of the unsuccessful candidates of my party, Bansal said. The newly-elected general secretary went on to re-affirm his commitment to the students,I plan to cooperate and work together with the other panel members to for the students.
