A seven-year-old boy drowned in Ghaggar river. The child, who went missing on August 23, was found dead on Sunday morning near Dera Bassi.
According to the police, the victim was identified as Aditya, alias Aadi, a resident of Ashiyana Complex, Sector 20 Part-2, Panchkula. An FIR was registered on the basis of statements given by the boy’s mother, Usha Devi.
Sub-Inspector Gurcharan Singh said, “The boy was playing near the house around 9–10 am. When he did not return at school time, the family started searching for him. His father, Amar Paswan, runs a tea stall nearby. Despite thorough searches in the neighbourhood, the child could not be traced, after which the matter was reported to the police.”
Later in the evening, the police received information from Dera Bassi about a body recovered from the Ghaggar river. On verification, it was confirmed to be Aditya. After post-mortem formalities, the body was handed over to the family and the last rites were performed.
The S-I said, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the boy may have accidentally gone towards the river while playing or possibly entered the water to bathe. However, we have initiated a CCTV footage examination to ascertain whether he went alone or with someone else. Further action will be taken based on the findings.”
