A 60-year-old woman, allegedly undergoing treatment at the Psychiatry Department of PGI, tried to commit suicide by jumping off the fourth floor of New OPD, PGI. The incident happened at around 8.30 am on Saturday.

The woman has been identified as Paramjit Kaur, a resident of Sector 20. According to police officials, the security guards present at the spot rushed her to the Advanced Trauma Centre. The condition of the woman is stable, but she has fractured her left arm and leg.

“Though the patient said that she is undergoing treatment at the Psychiatry Department of the institute, we could not find any medical card from her. It seems that the patient had come only to commit suicide,” said one of the police officials.

The woman had also written a suicide note mentioning the names of some of her relatives.

This is the fourth suicide attempt reported at the institute in the last two months. In August, a cancer patient committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of New OPD. On September 13, a computer operator jumped to death from the fifth floor of the Research Block. Days later, a psychiatry patient tried to end his life by jumping off the fourth floor of New OPD.
