The Punjab Government has suspended six more police officers in connection with the security protocol breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state in January last year. The action comes in the wake of the suspension of Bathinda Superintendent of Police Gurbinder Singh over the incident.

The six officers have been identified as deputy superintendents of police Praseen Singh and Jagdish Kumar, inspectors Jatinder Singh and Balwinder Singh, sub-inspector Jaswant Singh and assistant sub-inspector Ramesh Kumar who were on duty in Ferozepur on January 5, 2022 when PM Modi was travelling by road.

All the officers, including Gurbinder who was SP (Operations) at the time, were on the Piareana bridge where PM Modi’s convoy got stuck for 20 minutes as farmers had blocked the bridge ahead of his visit.

Gurkirat Kripal, Secretary (Home Affairs and Justice), issued the suspension orders in a letter dated November 22. Gurbinder’s suspension order came on November 21. The action was taken on the basis of the October 18, 2023 report of the Punjab Director General of Police, sources added.

It is expected that action will also be taken against several IPS officers who were earlier indicted for the serious security lapse by a Supreme Court-appointed committee. The panel had pointed out dereliction of duty by the then SSP Harmanbir Singh Hans, DIG Inderbir Singh and DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay.
