52-year-old woman crushed under truck

A 52-year-old woman,riding her two-wheeler without wearing a helmet,died after being hit by a rashly driven truck near Poultry Farm Chowk near Hallomajra on Tuesday.

A 52-year-old woman,riding her two-wheeler without wearing a helmet,died after being hit by a rashly driven truck near Poultry Farm Chowk near Hallomajra on Tuesday.

The body of the victim,identified as Sangeeta Asri,was mutilated beyond recognition as the front wheels of the truck ran over her. She died on the spot. The truck driver fled the spot after the incident.

Asri worked as a statistical assistant with the Woman and Child Welfare department,Haryana government,in Sector 34 since 1985. She had reportedly taken a half-day leave from work on account of navrataras and was on way to office when the mishap occurred around noon. Passersby rushed her to GMCH-32 where she was declared dead on arrival and a postmortem was conducted.

“The mishap occurred so suddenly,I saw her falling on the road and then the wheels crushed her completely. She was lying in a pool of blood on the road,” said Rajan,an eyewitness.

The victim is survived by her husband,an income tax officer in Jagadri,daughter Ridhi,a student of MCM College in Sector 36,and a son who works in Hyderabad. The family resides in Skynet Enclave in Zirakpur.

The truck driver was yet to be arrested at the time of filing the report. “Our raids are on and the driver will be arrested soon,” said Bhupinder Singh,SHO,Sector 31 police station. The police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304 A against the truck driver.

So great was the impact of the accident that a gold locket,which the victim was wearing,was recovered from deep inside her body during the course of postmortem. The victim’s daughter was earlier seen pleading with the police to find the locket which she said was very dear to her mother. “I will keep it with me all my life,she never used to part with it,” Ridhi said at the hospital.

Roads to death
While driving on Chandigarh roads is fast becoming a challenge,many two-wheeler riders who lost their lives recently were found driving without helmet. “We have always been asserting the importance of wearing helmets,a life is precious and it’s up to the people to strictly adhere to traffic rules for their safety,” said a traffic police officer.

January 25,2009: A 45-year-old woman died when the scooter on which she was riding pillion was hit by a truck near Poultry Farm Chowk.

May 15,2008: A teacher,Anuradha Gupta,died after the two-wheeler she was riding pillion on was run over by a Punjab Roadways bus. The mishap occurred on Sector 47 road near Faidan Barrier.

January 15,2008: A 23-year-old girl was crushed to death when her scooter was hit by a truck near the Railway lightpoint. The victim was a medical representative with a pharmaceutical company.
