The district court of Chandigarh has convicted a 35-year-old man of the abduction and rape of his eight-year-old neighbour.
The convict, identified as Manoj Kumar, has been held guilty by the court of Dr Yashika, Additional District and Sessions Judge. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Friday.
According to the police, an FIR had been registered against Manoj in December 2023 under charges of abduction, rape, criminal intimidation, and provisions of the POCSO Act, following a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.
The complaint had alleged that on December 2, 2023, the victim was alone at home with her siblings when her parents were away for work. On returning home, the mother found her daughter crying. Upon questioning, the child revealed that their neighbour Manoj had lured her to his house and sexually assaulted her.
Following a complaint, the police arrested Manoj and began investigation.
During the trial, the defence counsel argued that the accused has been falsely implicated in the case.
After hearing the arguments and going by the evidence produced, the court, however, held the accused guilty.
