The Punjab police on Sunday arrested five men accused of raping and murdering a 15-year old girl in November 2009. The girl,Sunaina, was a student of class IX in Jalandhar. Her partly burnt and mutilated body was found in a village near her house being eaten by dogs, and a wire could be seen around her neck.
On July 3 this year, the Punjab and Haryana High Court issued a notice to the Punjab DGP,seeking his reply by July 18 on a petition filed by the girls mother on the already two-and-a-half-year-old case. After the High Court order,an SIT was formed with officials from outside the district, and the case was solved in five days.
Out of the five men arrested, four Rohit, his brother Ramesh,Sandeep and Bheema had been interrogated by the police almost three years ago and had even taken a polygraph test a few months ago,but had been given a clean chit. Besides these, one more accused,Jaswinder Billa, was also arrested.
ACP (Crime) Rajinder Singh Cheema said that Sunaina had an affair with Rohit, who decided to kill her with the help of the other four after she started pressurizing him to marry her and threatened to expose him if he did not. Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Police (DCP) Sarabjit Singh added that the girl was raped by the five men, attacked with a sharp edged weapon and burnt so that he body would not be recognized. He also said that they had recovered the sharp edged weapon used to kill Sunaina.
