2 cops transferred; case goes to Crime Branch

Two police officers, including Sector-34 Station House Officer Inspector Udaypal and Burail police post in-charge Inspector Narinder Patial faced the axe on Tuesday.

Two police officers, including Sector-34 Station House Officer Inspector Udaypal and Burail police post in-charge Inspector Narinder Patial faced the axe on Tuesday for their alleged negligence and insensitivity in dealing with the Khushpreet kidnapping case. Both were transferred to Police Lines.

Investigation into the case has now been transferred to the Crime Branch.

It has been over a fortnight since five-year-old Khushpreet was kidnapped from his home in Burail. While his family paid a ransom of Rs 4 lakh to the kidnappers in the presence of nearly two dozen police personnel, the latter could neither arrest the accused, nor trace Khushpreet.

Transfer orders of the two officers came after Khushpreet’s parents and relatives met Senior Superintendent of Police Naunihal Singh at the police headquarters on Tuesday. Lakhbir Singh,Khushpreet’s father, had demanded stern action against the officers who “goofed up the operation”. “It has been so many days and there is no clue as to where is Khushpreet. The police don’t even have a clue as to who could have kidnapped my son,” said an agitated Lakhbir.

Deputy Superintendent of Police,Crime Branch,Satbir Singh said: We will try our best to solve the case as soon as possible.” The Crime Branch, which is trained to handle such heinous crime cases, was not even contacted by the south-division police till recently.

Ever since the ransom was paid to the kidnappers,in the presence of a heavy police force that had gone to provide security cover to Sukhwinder (Khushpreet’s uncle),the Chandigarh Police has been groping in the dark for clues.
