A minor girl who was allegedly gangraped in Haryana’s Sonipat district over a month ago committed suicide late Wednesday evening. The 17-year-old girl hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her residence in Gohana. Her family members have alleged that the police have not arrested all the five youths whom they had named. The police said they have arrested one youth who is in judicial custody now. The girl had gone missing from her home on February 6. After searching for her, the parents lodged a complaint with the police claiming she had gone to fetch wood from the fields in the village but did not return. The girl was finally traced and her medical examination showed she was raped. The victim’s family named five youths of the same village, accusing them of having gangraped their daughter. However, the police named only youth in the FIR and arrested him. She girl allegedly committed suicide at her residence late last evening. She was found dead this morning. The post-mortem examination has been conducted and the body handed over to her parents. According to the police, the victim was medically examined and her statements were recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC before a judicial magistrate. Superintendent of Police, Sonipat, Satheesh Balan, said, “The victim was 17-year-old and a school dropout. She was allegedly raped by one youth whom she had named in her statement. We have arrested the accused and he is in judicial custody. The chargesheet of the case is also ready. The victim committed suicide late Wednesday evening. I am told she took the extreme step under duress.” However, the victim’s family members said the victim was under trauma for the past one month. “Our daughter had not stepped out of home for the last one month. She had been living in a trauma. She was not talking to anybody. She had said that she did not want her family to face humiliation because of her,” one of the family members of the victim said.
